DKNY was founded in 1989 by Donna Karan. She began the line after trying to find clothing for her daughter, Gabby. She had in mind a collection of diverse, urban clothing that could be affordable while being stylish at the same time. Karan grew up in the fashion world around her father who was a tailor and her mother who was a model. She began designing clothing in high school then went on to Parson's School of Design where she was hired by designer Anne Klein. When Klein passed away, Karan became her successor. After 10 years designing Anne Klein, Karan launched her first New York collection. As her styles took over the fashion world, her labels spread throughout the world as well. Not only did she produce jeans and clothing, but in 1999 DKNY lingerie hit the scene with a bang.

She has received many other fashion awards as well. Karan along with her DKNY brand support many charities. She is the founder of Urban Zen which is the culmination of her philanthropic efforts. Karan says the initiative is to create a working structure for advancing wellness and preserving culture. Karan also co-chairs the annual New York "Kids for Kids" events for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric Aids Foundation. DKNY also sells shirts on the website where all proceeds go to one of five charities in New York.
